Tips for packing your furniture when moving

When preparing for a move, you have to leave some time to deal with packing boxes, as this can easily turn out to be more demanding than you could’ve imagined. Packing your clothes might not be that complicated, but that’s not the case with packing your furniture. Of course, you want your furniture to be delivered intact to your chosen destination, so you need to take some precautionary measures to make sure your valuable items don’t get damaged during transportation. If you’re downsizing and moving into a smaller home, consider selling or donating unwanted items. However, we suggest that you stick to the following tips for packing your furniture, and you are good to go.

1. Gather all the necessary supplies

The first thing you need to do before you get down to packing is to obtain all the moving supplies you’ll need to pack everything you own. Make a list of everything you think you’ll need and do not start packing until you gather all that. For instance, make sure you have enough packing paper, tape, bubble wrap, plastic stretch wrap, sofa and mattress covers, and the like. Remember that, in case you’re having trouble finding everything you need, you can leave it to your moving company to provide you with the moving supplies instead of having the cheapest way to move out of state.

2. Clean and dust your furniture

Once you’ve obtained all the moving supplies, leave some time to clean and dust all your furniture pieces before you pack anything. Not only is it less messy to pack clean furniture, but you’ll also find it easier to unpack and set up your furniture once you get to your new house if it has been previously cleaned and dusted.

3. Dismantle

Of course, there are probably some furniture items that cannot be dismantled, but where there’s an option to disassemble, do not miss to do so. For instance, you can remove the legs from your tables and couches, remove the cushions, take your bed frames apart, etc. When doing so, remember to stick to a manual so as to dismantle each piece of furniture correctly. It is also advisable to put all the screws you remove to a sealable plastic bag and make sure you don’t lose any hardware during the transportation. Also, when you are figuring out how to pack a computer, you will see there are many detachable parts, you can take off.

4. Wrap, wrap, wrap

As previously mentioned, one of the things you should not start packing without is bubble wrap. Once you’ve dismantled your furniture, make sure you wrap each and every piece of it, as otherwise, these could get damaged in some way on your way to your new house. For instance, you can use bubble wrap to protect your delicate wood pieces, as well as glass tables and mirrors. It’s also used to pack glassware and other breakables, so plan your moving budget for the packing supplies as well.

5. Think about placement

Finally, do not forget that you need to pay particular attention to the way you place your items in the moving truck. For instance, you can first put boxes of the same size in such a way that you create a “wall” at the back of the truck and then continue with square furniture, mattresses, upholstered items, etc.

Even though it can be demanding and time-consuming, remember that packing your furniture does not have to be stressful – not if you keep the previously mentioned tips in mind, and, of course, make sure you leave enough time to take care of it. In case you’re moving alone to another state, avoid relocation depression, and invite some friends to help or call professionals.
